Archaeologia Baltica employs a structured peer review process to ensure the academic quality, originality, and scientific relevance of submitted manuscripts.
- The Submission of Manuscripts
Authors are required to submit their manuscripts via the journal's electronic submission system or via e-mail (archaeologia.baltica@ku.lt). These manuscripts must be submitted in accordance with the Instructions for Authors. It is imperative to note that a cover letter must be submitted with each submission. It is expected that authors will suggest at least three potential reviewers who have no conflict of interest with the authors.
- Initial Editorial Screening
The Editor-in-Chief, or a member of the editorial board designated for this purpose, will conduct a preliminary evaluation of the manuscript in order to determine whether:
The subject is consistent with the thematic scope of the journal.
It is evident that the document under consideration adheres to the prescribed formatting and technical requirements.
The text meets the fundamental criteria that are customary within academic and ethical discourse.
Manuscripts that do not satisfy these criteria may be rejected without external review.
- Peer Review Stage
Manuscripts that successfully complete the preliminary evaluation are then submitted for anonymous peer review. Each submission is subjected to a rigorous evaluation process by at least two independent expert reviewers. The duration of the peer-review process is typically four to six weeks.
The journal employs a double-blind peer-review system to ensure impartial assessment.
The following aspects are subject to review:
The originality and scientific contribution of the research are of paramount importance.
The application of rigorous methodological principles is of paramount importance.
The argumentation must be clear and coherent.
The adequacy of data analysis and interpretation is of paramount importance.
- The Function of Reviewers' Recommendations
Following the evaluation process, reviewers are required to provide one of the following recommendations:
- The proposal is to be accepted without any revisions.
- The proposal is to be accepted with revisions.
- Reject.
In the event of a divergence of opinion between reviewers, a third peer review may be requested in order to evaluate the manuscript.
- Editorial Decision-Making
The Editor arrives at a decision based on the reports submitted by the reviewers. In instances where revision is deemed necessary, authors are requested to submit a revised version of their manuscript, accompanied by a comprehensive response to the comments provided by reviewers. Revised manuscripts may be returned to the original reviewers for further evaluation.
- Decision and publication of final manuscript
Following the satisfactory completion of revisions and the granting of final approval by the editorial board, the manuscript is accepted for publication. The document then undergoes a series of editing processes, including copy-editing, proofreading, and layout preparation, prior to being published online (within 3–4 months after the submission) and subsequently in the printed journal (at the end of each year).
The journal adheres to the established principles of international publication ethics. Papers submitted for publication are subject to a rigorous process of plagiarism detection. In addition, both authors and reviewers are obliged to disclose any potential conflicts of interest.
